What to Do Before and After a Snowstorm

Tuesday, November 18th, 2014 by Scott Siegal

Early this year, the Washington Post reported that Washington DC was hit by a massive snowstorm, resulting in a seven-inch-deep snow. This occurrence has been recorded as the 10th biggest snowstorm DC has experienced in March. While we can’t stop a snowstorm from occurring, residents should be prepared for any possible hits, especially when winter is just around the corner.

Maggio Roofing, a leading roofer in Washington DC, answers one of the most frequently asked questions about snowstorms: what should be done before and after a snowstorm?

Mitigation and extreme preparation are key in handling a snowstorm way before it hits your area. You may choose to do the following:

  1. Invest in a good and properly installed ventilation and insulation system so that you are properly warmed and comfortable even while the storm hits. Further, this also helps in avoiding the formation of ice dams, which can cause further damage.
  2. Keep your drainage systems clean and debris-free.
  3. Perform roofing inspection twice a year (or as needed) to be better informed of your roof’s condition.

There are also some things to be done after a snowstorm has hit. The following are simple enough to do on your own, but do exercise caution:

  1. Be sure to remove snow from your doors and windows to avoid water from seeping in.
  2. Remove icicles before you start working outside. Note that icicles are a sign that you may be experiencing water damage.
  3. Your roof is weighted by debris and snow. You may want to remove them to lighten the burden. This is a good way to prevent the formation of ice dams. You can do this from the ground with a long-enough snow rake. Or better yet, you can call a professional.

Do not attempt to climb the roof, though. Leave the complicated tasks to the experts. For roof repair or replacements, contact Washington DC roofers Maggio Roofing.
